On the role of tracking on Eulerian–Lagrangian solutions of the transport equation

چکیده
We investigate the effect of tracking errors on the accuracy and stability of Eulerian– Lagrangian methods (ELMS) for the solution of the transport equation. A combination of formal analysis and numerical experimentation demonstrates that the effect is severe. Even moderate tracking errors substantially affect the preservation of the zeroth, first and second moments of concentration (mass, phase and diffusion) and may lead to the instability of otherwise stable and very accurate ELMs. The use of accurate tracking algorithms is strongly recommended for Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations involving complex flows. q 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. A forward particle tracking Eulerian–Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method for solution of the contaminant transport equation in three dimensions
The contaminant transport equation is solved in three dimensions using the Eulerian–Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method (ELLAM). Trilinear and finite volume test functions defined by the characteristics of the governing equation are employed and compared. Integrations are simplified by forward tracking of integration points along the characteristics. The resulting equations are solved using a p...
متن کاملSimulating Solute Transport in Porous or Fractured Formations Using Random Walk Particle Tracking: A Review
Traditional Eulerian approaches to solute transport generally require very fine discretization of the transport Since the first attempts some 20 yr ago in the field of hydrology, domain to overcome recurrent problems of unstable nurandom walk (RW) particle tracking as applied to solute transport has experienced profound changes. Concepts and mathematical techmerical solutions and/or artificial ...
متن کاملEulerian Lagrangian Simulation of Particle Capture and Dendrite Formation on Binary Fibers
The capture efficiency of the small aerosol particle is strongly influenced by the structure of fibrous layers. This study presents particle deposition and dendrite formation on different arrangements of binary fibers. 2-D numerical simulation is performed using the open source software of OpenFOAM. In the instantaneous filtration of a single fiber, obtained results are in good agreement with th...

Because of different behavior of reservoir water and dam material, the determination of hydrodynamic pressure during earthquake is very complicated. Thus, different formulations have been presented for modeling of the dam reservoir system under dynamic loading such as earthquake. These formulations can be categorized into two general groups, which are Lagrangian and Eulerian, each having advant...
متن کاملEulerian quadrature-based moment models for dilute polydisperse evaporating sprays
Dilute liquid sprays can be modeled at the mesoscale using a kinetic equation, namely the Williams-Boltzmann equation, containing terms for spatial transport, evaporation and fluid drag. The most common method for simulating the Williams-Boltzmann equation uses Lagrangian particle tracking wherein a finite ensemble of numerical “parcels” provides a statistical estimate of the joint surface area...
